Misted Monuments

Avery AtkinS

Daniel and I had immersed our day in Edinburgh with the small details of the city —the castle, the royal yacht, Victoria Street—but we still hadn’t seen enough. I wanted to explore Calton Hill and its Enlightenment monuments before we left. We tackled the stone stairs up the hillside as the sun slipped behind the distant castle. The clouds deepened into a dusty blue, the air cooling with them. The stone city was swallowed by shadows, softened by the golden glow emanating from each window. The Old Town and New Town united under the hues and haar of night. As the view of the city took our breath away, time seemed to slow to let us catch it again.
